Newport Astronomy Club Talk
Speaker: Eamonn Ansbro, M.Ast. M.Phil. PhD (ABD) FRAS,
Location: Abbey Suite, Hotel Newport
Time: 8pm
Admission: €5 for non-members.

Eamonn Ansbro, M.Ast. M.Phil. PhD (ABD) FRAS, is Director of Kingsland Observatory in County Roscommon, which is involved in planetary research, SETI and instrumentation. Widening the scope of new methods of detecting extra-terrestrial intelligent civilisations would offer more options within radio and optical SETI.

ET civilisations may be using transfer information over vast galactic distances instantaneously outside the electromagnetic spectrum. This possible activity may be by passing current SETI radio methods for detection. This means that it opens up the possibility of widening the search capabilities for an early detection in using new recently developed tools.

Ansbro has been involved in astronomy since the age of 8 when given a present of “The Boy’s Book of Space”. From being an enthusiastic observer, Eamonn progressed to making his own mirrors and he then went on to make telescopes. He eventually set up an observatory in Dublin where he made a number of significant discoveries (co-discovery of a hydrogen envelope around the rings of Saturn in1974; discovery of moonquakes in 1975; and discovery of a new star in 1976).
